DescriptionJar of long globular form with pedestal base, everted spout and rim, and strap-loop handle. Blue tin glaze decorated in blue with unusual Apollo cartouche: head and shoulders of radiant Apollo above shield at top and dragon without spread wings at the bottom, inscribed "S RUB IDAEL." Partly glazed base.Label TextSyrupus de Rubus Idaeus was made from the fruit and leaves of the raspberry bush and was used in "gargarisms [gargles], against vomiting and looseness of the belly." A privately owned wet jar with similar cartouche, but "two serpents" instead of a dragon, is dated 1717, which suggests a later date for the few surviving pieces with this version of the Apollo cartouche.
