DescriptionOne of a pair of plates with incised foot rings. Bluish tin glaze with a coarsely powdered manganese ground: in the center, an octagonal reserve with a waterside fortress and sailboats; on the rim, alternating hexagonal and flower-shaped reserves containing flower sprigs and rayed blossoms, respectively; on the base, a half-moon shape in blue. Rim edged in orange.Label TextFive related delft plates (from three sets) are presently known. All are dated 1740, have the same scene and powder ground, and similar rim reserve decoration. See also a flower brick in the CWF collection (accession 1954-731) with closely related decoration. The design is also found on Bristol-attributed tiles.
