DescriptionThis is a rectangular piece of striped textiles used as a blanket, but probably once functioning as a woman's petticoat (skirt). The main portion of the textile consists of two large panels of plain-woven blue & white stripes, woven with natural linen warps and striped in the weft direction with light and dark blue woolens and white cotton. One of the narrow stripes gives an arrow-like effect, made by twisting together blue and white wefts prior to weaving. Two narrow ends of the main textile are extended with small pieces of various linen warp/ woolen weft textiles, woven in subtle blue and brown stripes and measuring about 3 3/4 inches wide. Narrow hems. No linings.
Label TextAlthough converted for use as a small blanket, this striped textile may have begun life as a woman's everyday petticoat, or skirt. It can be compared to the petticoat, accession number 1991-444, in the Williamsburg collection.
