DescriptionThis is a small rectangular quilted cover, possibly for a pillow. The cover is white cotton, embellished with cord quilting in an asymmetrical design of a central bird on branch, possibly a phoenix, surrounded by curving and angular strapwork, scrolling flowers, and leaves. A narrow outer border, 1 3/4 inches wide, features interlacing abstracted flowers, scrolls, hearts, diamonds, and bow-knots. The edges are finished with tape folded over and stitched. The needlework is done with linen running stitches worked at 12 per inch. The cording consists of white cotton, and the backing fabric is cotton.ProvenanceEx. collection Mrs. Dewitt Clinton Cohen.
