DescriptionThis is a small, paper reward of merit present to Lucy Gray Waring. The reward consists of a centered vignette of a seated elderly male teacher with a male and female child.There are decorative C scrolls flanking the image. The inscription on the reward reads: "REWARD/ OF MERIT/ Presented to Lucy G. Waring/ By her Instructress."
Label TextThis commendation was presented to Lucy Gray Waring, student number 516 at the Tappahannock Female Seminary in Essex County, Virginia. Lucy was the granddaughter of Mrs. Lucy Wellford Gray, the instructress, and was probably named in honor of the esteemed matriarch. The relationship between Lucy and Martha Waring (whose sampler is in the CWF collection) has not been determined. Born in 1830, Lucy Gray Waring died in 1841, shortly after receiving her certificate from her grandmother for good behavior.
