DescriptionTankard with straight sides, wide molded baseband, and narrow molded band at top of body; stepped lid with low dome and crenellated lip; split scrolled thumbpiece; and S-shaped handle with plain rounded terminal.MarkingsFour marks stamped inside lid and on side of tankard to right of the handle ( maker's mark also stamped on lower handle): Grimwade #3179-- "WI" with three dots above and three dots below in relief within an octagon; Britannia standard; gothic "i" date letter for 1704-1705; and a lion's head erased.
ProvenanceThis tankard descended in a prominent Rhode Island family berfore it belonged to Clouds Hill Victorian Museum.
Edward Wimans entered his mark in the London Goldsmith guild as a largeworker probably in April 1697.
