The capacity mark "4" is painted in blue under each handle. Stamped into the side with blue decoration painted over it, "Richmond Factory/Virga/J.P.Schermerhorn"
Label TextFew of John P. Schermerhorn's known vessels are marked, but scholars have recently identified many of his stoneware pots based on their common construction techniques and designs. Schermerhorn stamped his pieces instead of using a flourished signature like Lowndes did. This jar is also decorated with cobalt blue floral motifs similar to those on the reverse of the Lowndes piece.
