DescriptionJug. Ovoid-bodied jug with wide oval mouth and strap handle. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with the Chinese lotus pattern on the base, the inscription "Mr. White / 1750."Label TextTwo privately owned jugs with similarly unusual rims are decorated with a Chinese landscape design usually associated with Liverpool. The present jug was published in 1971 as being "probably Irish", but that attribution cannot be substantiated. Two water bottles of different London attributed forms and a basin (all in the CWF collection) are decorated with this original Chinese pattern (accessions 1954-769, 1955-231, and 1958-506). Fragments with this decoration have been excavated in London, and a small shard with this pattern was excavated in Williamsburg at Wetherburn's Tavern (9NA.1524).
