DescriptionMan's coat of rust red napped wool in plain weave. Collarless, with straight fronts, full skirts shaped into fan pleats on hips; row of 21 non-functional buttons covered with gold metallic thread and corresponding false buttonholes outlined in gold galloon extend full length of fronts with similar ornamentation on back flap trimmed with galloon in rows. Sleeves ending in 5 1/2" cuffs with gold galloon and buttons. Linen lining. Shown at right in photograph with two other coats.Construction History:

ProvenanceCoat has a history of being in the collection of painter Frank Moss Bennett and was probably made as a prop. It is machine sewn and shows no wear; the cut of the sleeves is not typical of the eighteenth century, and the buttons are non-functional. See research in file.
