DescriptionPlate with incised foot ring. White tin glaze with a powdered manganese ground. In the center, a flower shaped reserve with two oriental men seated at a table in a garden; on the rim, three fish reserves. Outlined and decorated in blue.Label TextThis delft plate features a white tin glaze with a powdered manganese ground. A flower shaped central reserve sports two oriental men seated at a table in a garden, the whole surrounded by three fish reserves. Four plates from a related service are known; they carry the same central design and powder ground, but have different rim reserves and are dated 1741. A privately owned thirteen-inch dish with the same central motif seen here has four fish around the rim.
The Bristol attribution for this plate is based on the coarseness of the powdered ground. Fragments of dishes with fish on a powdered ground have been excavated on several Williamsburg sites, including the George Reid House-Capt. Orr dwelling (1IEA.0719, llEA.0725), Wetherburn's Tavern (9NA.1534), and Bassett Hall (IAA.O154). Fragments of tea cups with similar decorations are among those at the Victoria and Albert Museum found in London.
