DescriptionLadder-back side chair with cylindrical legs, possibly tapering slightly towards tops of legs and stiles; rear stiles have finials composed of a turned ball with a point on top over a narrow ring; three horizontal shaped slats with serpentine top edges between stiles; double rounded front and side stretchers and one rear stretcher; woven rush seat.ProvenanceThese chairs were owned by the Harrison family in Whiteford, Maryland (Harford County). Part of the family property is in Pennsylvania. The donor's great grandmother, Irene Harrison Reynolds' brother William Harrison and wife Hannah Johnson Harrison (m. 1867) lived in the house. Per family history, the house and its contents descended from them to the donor's great aunt, Isabella Reynolds Hess (d. 1946), to his parents Irene Reynolds and William R. Hildgendorff. When the house was sold, the donor obtained the chairs.
The William Harrison mentioned above was the nephew of President William Henry Harrison.
