DescriptionDish with sloping rim and raised footing. Blue tin glaze decorated in blue: in the well, a river scene with European houses, a conical tree in the background, a Chinese fisherman on a bridge, and two figures in a skiff in the foreground. On the rim, a bianco-sopra-bianco pineapple and flower motif; three long wavy lines in blue on reverse rim.Label TextThis particular bianco-sopra-bianco pattern is usually attributed to Bristol. Plates dated 1761 and 1767 have the same blue and bianco decoration. A slightly smaller dish (accession 1954-885) and a set of eight nine-inch plates (accession 1962-273, 1-8) in the Colonial Williamsburg collection are decorated with the same pattern. Fragments with this pattern have been excavated on several sites in Williamsburg, including the Chiswell-Bucktrout House (2HB.0335, 2HB.0336, 2HB.0337), the William Finnie House (2BA.0833, 2BA.0834), the Custis site (4BA), and Bassett Hall (IAB.OOOI).
