DescriptionPlate with incised foot ring. Blue tin glaze decorated in blue: in the well, the inscription "VIEVAT ALTONA 1761," a river scene with European houses, a conical tree in the background, a Chinese fisherman on a bridge, and two figures in a skiff in the foreground. On the rim, three repeats of a bianco-sopra-bianco pineapple and flower motif; three long wavy lines on the reverse.Label TextVievat may be a misspelling of the Latin word meaning "long live," and Altona is a city in Germany. Two other plates from the same service are in European museums. More than a dozen additional bowls and plates with German or Scandinavian names or inscriptions, dating between 1758 and 1765, are known. About half of them are decorated with the same or a related Bristol bianco-sopra-bianco pattern seen here.
Inscribed"VIEVAT ALTONA 1761" appears on the front.
