DescriptionPunch bowl with almost cylindrical foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decorated on the exterior in blue and manganese with Chinese landscape including a pagoda. On the interior, a geometric bianco-sopra-bianco band and the inscription "Success to the British Arms" in blue.Label TextCeramics molded or painted with inscriptions and illustrations commemorating the Seven Years' War survive in salt-glazed stoneware as well as in delft. Those inscribed "Success to the British Arms" are the most common in delft. Bowls with variations of this inscription--"Success to British Arms in America" and "Success to the British Fleet"--have also been found. The base of a delft punch bowl inscribed "Success to the British Navy" was excavated in Williamsburg at the Timberlake and Dana site (2JA.OI89). The geometric bianco-sopra-bianco decoration on this bowl is unusual, since most bianco designs incorporated flowers, tendrils, and leaves or scrolls and cartouches. Two bowls dated 1755 have related London-ascribed bianco-sopra-bianco decoration. The London attribution is based on the related London bowls and on the glaze.
Inscribed"Success to the British Arms" on interior of bowl.
