DescriptionTankard of cylindrical shape over domed spreading foot. Above the foot is a shallow cavetto molding, the transitions marked with incised beads. Another incised bead demarcates the upper frieze, which is decorated with gilt. The applied molded strap handle with beaded rouletting at the lower terminal. The foot ring rectangular. The black-flecked greige glaze generally smooth with accretions around the foot ring. The remainder of the decoration executed in polychrome enamels and gilt. The inside edge with a border of red and gilt tripartite tassels of alternating larger and smaller sizes. The outside of the tankard with a swirling flowering tree with a combination of plum blossoms, asters, and peonies in addition to leaves growing both on the scraggly tree and also floating around it as sprigs. Opposite the handle is an oval cartouche with framing border of red and gilt scroll-work and shell work. This above "17 46 / C*BACON;" in black. The cartouche containing a scene of a man and woman in 17th century style clothing; the woman reclining on the ground and the man kneeling, ostensibly with some sort of musical instrument. The two figures in a sort of contained garden, with a fountain and well immediate behind the woman and a large structure with brick walls and casement windows behind the man. A tree with apple-like fruits arches over both their heads.Inscribed"1746 / C * BACON:" in black below the main cartouche.
