ProvenanceThe original bill for this sugar dish and the cream pot (1964-276) from Isaac Hutton to Peter Edmund Elmendorf II, Elizabeth Van Rensselaer's husband, dated March 10, 1797, is in the Sanders Papers, The New York Historical Society and is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue of the Glen-Sanders Collection, fig. 33. This sugar bowl and cover in all probability is "a sugar cup" in the "List of Articles Brought in the family by Maria /Elmendorf/ Sanders, Married Peter Sanders 1824" and the "1" /Silver/ Sugar Bowl /Solid/ Marked E.V.R. " and the "1 Sugar Bowl marked EVR" in the bills of sale of 1874. (see appended copies of documents) This piece, then, would have the same line of descent from Maria Elmendorf to Jane Livingstone Ten Broeck Sanders as the other pieces appearing in these lists.
