DescriptionThis is a sampler of darning stitches (or weaves done with a needle) in colored silks (mustard, brown, blue, turquoise, coral, green, pink, red, and rust) on natural tabby-woven linen/cotton fabric, in a layout of squares and crosses worked in twills, birdseye, herringbone, diaper, and tabby patterns. Around large center cross: at top, a coronet with initials A V under; left side AN; right side NO; and at bottom, coronet with 1768 under, all worked in cross stitch.Stitches: birdseye, cross over two, diaper, eyelet, herringbone
Label TextThis darning sampler was presumably completed by a Dutch schoolgirl with the initials A.V. in 1768, as indicated by the piece's inscription. It features overlapping rectangles of different darning stitches in a variety of colors, including red, blue, green, orange, and pink. This sampler was possibly the final sewing product of a girl practicing how to delicately, beautifully, and sturdily repair holes in clothing and fabric accessories.
