Label TextThis is darning sampler that was made by a skilled needleworker, probably in the Netherlands or Germany. It is inscribed with "IMM ANNO 1771," indicating that the sampler was made by someone with the initials I (or J, as the two were interchangeable in needleworked inscriptions throughout the 18th century), M, M in the year 1771. Darning samplers allowed needleworkers to practice and perfect their mending stitches, so they would know how to beautifully mend rips or tears in clothing, accessories, and household textiles.
