DescriptionThis is a square darning sampler worked in polychrome silks on a natural color linen ground. The sampler consists of 12 crosses darned in either plain weave or broken twill. In the center is an embroidered sprig of three roses and a bud. At center bottom is the signature, "M. Wigg." The sampler is enclosed in a border of an embroidered stripe and an added edging of heavier linen.Stitches: chain, cross, hem, outline, and pattern darning
Label TextDarning samplers, like this one, were practice pieces intended to teach mending techniques. Instead of the usual alphabets, numbers, and verses, the stitcher simulated different fabric weaves in embroidery. Holes were deliberately cut into a ground linen and then repaired with darning stitches. Knowing how to darn was useful in the repair of the woven household textiles.
