DescriptionThis is a darning sampler consisting of polychrome silk embroidery threads on a natural wool ground. There are nine portions of darning, each featuring a horizontal and a vertical band, resulting in nine crosses. Surrounding the central cross is an inscription "Martha Cross June 15th 1802," stitched in black thread.

Label TextThis is a square darning sampler made by Martha Cross in England, completed on June 15th, 1802. Darning samplers allowed needleworkers to practice and perfect their mending stitches, so they would know how to beautifully mend rips or tears in clothing, accessories, and household textiles.
