DescriptionLobed cup-form creeam jug extended on end to form lip spout opposite loop handle; decorated on exterior of one side with fable of "Wolf and the Crane"; crane to right with bill in mouth of seated wolf in landscape with blue sky, mountains, birds, few trees; on other side, floral spray and butterfly; and on interior, blue floral spray.Label TextThe decoration on this piece is attributed to Jefferyes Hammett O'Neale on stylistic grounds. Although none of the three recorded Chelsea examples signed by O'Neale is of the fable type, a similarity in design and shape can be seen between them and some fable painted pieces. The bouquet of flowers on the opposite side of this jug has the same characteristic double-stem, or "wishbone," end as on the two signed O'Neale pieces discussed in CWF accession 1962-87.
The fable here depicted is that of "The Wolf and the Crane." The animals appear in Barlow in a similar pose.
Red anchor period.
