DescriptionPlate with incised foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with a coat of arms incorporating a quartered shield with roses and other designs, a cornet, dog supporters and the motto PRAESTO ET PERSTO. On the rim, garlands and scrolls within a narrow band. Inscribed 1750.
Label TextThe arms on this delft plate are those of Thomas, seventh Earl of Haddington, who was born in 1720, succeeded to the title in 1735, and died in 1794. He married the widow Mary Lloyd (nee Holt) in 1750, the year inscribed on this plate. The family name of the Earls of Haddington is Hamilton, and they come from East Lothian in the Lowlands of Scotland. Perhaps the initials on the plate are those of a couple to whom the Earl made a gift at the time of his wedding. It is also possible that this is a commemorative plate, made for a silver anniversary or another later occasion, because the rim decoration suggests that the plate was manufactured twenty to thirty years after the date of the inscription. The Liverpool attribution is based on the profile.
