DescriptionShort mitts (fingerless gloves) for infant of white tabby weave linen, needleworked in scrolling floral pattern and three lines over the back of each hand using pale cream silk. Open thumb set into hands; no fingers. Rounded flap extending over fingers from back of hand. Unlined. Stitches used: Back stitch and satin stitch.
ProvenanceTyped sheet accompanying mitts gives the following history: "This pair of mitts was worn by Elisabeth Davis (who was the mother of Hannah Leighton, who was the mother of Elisabeth (Jones) Wait, who was the mother of Sarah M. Wait (Strong), who was the mother of Elisabeth Strong (McClure), who was the mother of Emma McClure, who was the mother of Elisabeth McClure Williams, at her christening in the year 1717 in..."
