DescriptionFlagon: flat topped double domed circular cover with broad projecting flange with paired incised lines near edge; cover attached to handle with hinge with double-lobed thumbpiece soldered vertically at right-angles to upper hinge plate and cover; tall tapered straight-sided cylindrical body with multiple molding at rim and base; S-scroll handle of D-shaped section with double-lobed terminal soldered to body at rim and to lower section.Label TextWilliam Wood II (1645-1726) of Birmingham was the principal maker of this type of flagon. They are characterized by a tall vertical body that is fitted with a flat-topped cover with a projecting flange with elaborate denticulation opposite twin-lobed thumbpiece. Their thin strap handles have twin-lobed terminals. This example has sustained damage to its cover denticulations and its handle. Wood cast this cover in the same mold as he did the cover of tankard 1956-394. This gives a precise idea of the openwork denticulation that this cover originally had.
