DescriptionA Chinese porcelain goblet or challis of European glass shape decorated in translucent enamels. The inverted bell-shaped bowl stands on a three ring stem and a high domed foot. The bowl is decorated with peonies, chrysanthemums and butterflies amidst rocks. The gilt rim is bordered by a sepia line on the exterior; a matching line underscores the decoration around the base of the bowl. The rings at the stem are destinguished by similar sepia lines, the wide central ring embellished with black scrollwork and red and yellow flowers. The foot is edged by an iron red scrolling cloud border. Full blossoms in rose and blue and demi-flowers in iron red decorate the border. The domed foot is painted with blossoming flowers, butterflies, and alternating jeweled cash coins and swastika symbols.
Label TextDerived from European glass prototypes, this wine cup is decorated in translucent enamels. Comprised of a color palette that typically includes green, blue, black, and iron red, these enamels react on porcelain the way watercolor responds on paper. Because they are translucent, achieving depth of color requires building up layers on the surface. This decoration was popular during the second half of the 17th century through the first quarter of the 18th century.
