DescriptionChild's cap of embroidered net. Ecru machine-made net ground is run with small-scale floral design in darning, eyelet, and other stitches outlined in heavy white silk. Grapes, leaves and eyelet rosettes appear in the small-scale motif. The cap has a narrow insert at the back of the head between the circular crown and the brim of cap. No lining.ProvenanceAccording to family tradition, the cap descended from the Upham family, who lived in the Upham House in Melrose, Massachusetts. The donor received the cap from the estate of Miss Ester Upham (b. ca. 1867), then living in Summit, New Jersey. The cap was said to have been made by Miss Esther Upham's Aunt Pheobe. Miss Upham was born in Melrose, Mass., and later resided in Summit, N.J. until her death at the age of 97.
