DescriptionThis is a rectangular sampler featuring polychrome silk and metallic threads on an off-white linen ground. The outer edge has samples of various scalloped and crenated edgings finished in a buttonhole stitch and within this are embroidered samples of geometric border designs. The center portion of the sampler includes isolated and scattered flowers and fruits embroidered in various stitches, and the center features a crown embroidered with metallic thread, cypher and date (1729). The cypher likely relates to a specific European family, perhaps of a German state. Stitches: buttonhole, satin, and tent stitch
Label TextThis sampler, most likely made in 1729, the date stitched in its center, features scrolling flowers and fruits with a border of satin-stitched bands. Along with a date, the center also features a cypher and a crown. The cypher, made up of a five pointed coronet and perhaps a very elaborate "R" and either "E" or "B," was probably associated with an aristocrat. If this is the case, the stitcher of the sampler was likely a member of the family whose patriarch (or matriarch) the cypher belonged to. The cypher remains mysterious thus far, but determining who used it would perhaps lead to a discovery of who stitched this fine sampler.
