DescriptionThis is a long whiteworked band sampler stitched in linen and silk embroidery threads on a linen ground. It is made up of two different samplers stitched together -- one is a seventeenth-century English sampler, and the portion with buttonholes and tabs is eighteenth-century Dutch. The sampler is hemmed on all four sides. The sampler has three tabs at the top, with three buttonholes below. In between this is a stitched crown and an inscription "MB 1713" in a faded pink silk thread. Below the buttonholes is a floral scroll embroidered in pink, green, and white silk. Below this is a series of white embroidered border designs in bands. On the attached piece are several examples of drawnwork and cutwork border designs. Stitches: bullion, buttonhole, chain, detached buttonhole, double back stitch, foursided, God's eyes, hemstitch, herringbone, making cross, needle lace filling pattern, outline, pattern darning, satin, woven bars, and wrapped bars
Label TextWhile at first glance, this whitework sampler seems to be a single, long band, it is actually two samplers sewn together. One sampler was made in England in the seventeenth century, and the other was made in the Netherlands in the eighteenth century. At some point in history, these two disparate pieces were attached, likely because of their similar bands of whitework and lace making.
