DescriptionPlate, of circular form with ogee-molded marly. The gray glaze over gray-buff body. The foot ring integral. The marly decorated with a border of red and gilt grapes and vines with green leaves. The inner edge of marly decorated with a gilt band and a further band of deep blue rosettes. The center with an eagle in browns with wings outspread and head facing right. The eagle with shield body, with the shield containing a horizontal blue band over a series of red and white stripes. The eagle standing over the instruments of war, namely: a cannon, several axes, arrows, cannon balls, and numerous flags and banners. The eagle with a blue banner in its mouth reading "E PLUPIB UMUM [sic]." With twelve stars surmounting.Label TextIn the years following the Revolutionary War, American rapidly came to dominate the trade in Chinese export porcelains. This plate was made for the American market, probably at the time of the War of 1812; nonetheless, its border pattern clearly shows the lasting influence of English creamware design.
