DescriptionSquare tile: bluish tin glaze decorated in reddish-brown with a copperplate transfer print of an elegant couple standing in a garden before a potted pineapple and a Chinese-style fence, all within a rococo scroll border.Label TextThe design on this tile also is found in reverse. The central figures, used here in a different setting, were closely copied from The Ladies Amusement, which was also the source for many other transfer-printed tiles. This design is often called "The odd couple after Watteau" because although there is no evidence that it had any relation to the work of that painter, it was cataloged as such in 1905, when John Hodgkin published the first list of Liverpool-printed tiles. This border design is known as "88" because of the double loop on both sides that looks like an 8.
