DescriptionSmall pewter strainer with shallow circular bowl of thin metal with plain rim; lower part of bowl pierced with circular holes in the design of a highly stylized floral blossom within a circle.
Label TextSurviving punch strainers in a variety of materials date from the last quarter of the seventeenth century onward. The design of the piercing of this rare pewter example is of a common type in the form of a stylized floral blossom that could be easily laid out with the arcs of a compass. There is no evidence of the presence of a handle, and no known similar example in pewter with which to compare it.
