DescriptionWoman's jacket of deep red ground chintz, mordant-painted and resist dyed with small-scale flowers. The garment has a deep slightly rounded V neckline at front and back. Long, tight set-in sleeves are constructed from pieces shaped to form a curve at the elbows, ending in a vent at each wrist. The front fastens with replacement hooks and eyes. The short hip-length skirt is pleated to the bodice with clusters of pleats at the hips and back. The bodice and sleeves are lined with checked pink and cream linen; the skirt is lined with heavy white plain-woven cotton.Label TextThis dark ground chintz was made in India and used in the Dutch market. With its slightly raised waist and long tight sleeves, this jacket can be dated to the end of the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. A characteristic Dutch feature is the deep squared V at the back neckline.
