DescriptionWoman’s gown (with petticoat #2) made of patterned silk in a design of undulating lacy ribbons entwined with flowers on a narrow striped ground of reddish-purple shading to cream. Brocading threads are green, blue, orange, cream twist yarns, and metallic silver; additional patterning is done with supplementary warps and wefts in cream silk. The gown has folded back flat robings extending in one piece from the shoulders to the hem. The front is open to reveal the matching petticoat and a stomacher (missing) or kerchief. Modern ribbon ties fasten the center front bodice. The untrimmed sleeves extend to the elbows, missing cuffs or ruffles. The skirt is pleated on either side to create fullness intended for small hoops, where pocket slits are positioned. Skirt hem cut to curve up at the fronts. The back of the gown is pleated with two wide box pleats at the shoulders, falling uninterrupted to the hem (sack back). The interior of the gown is fitted with a brown linen inner bodice with eyelets for lacing at front and back. Skirt is faced with brown linen at hem. The gown shows evidence of remodeling and piecing at the waistline and the ends of the sleeves. Gown may have been a loose wrapping gown at one time.
Photographed with antique white sleeve ruffles and kerchief, and modern ribbons.
