DescriptionOne of a pair of woman's slip-on shoes made of white silk satin lined with linen. The shoes have pointed toes and white silk satin ribbon rosettes stitched to the instep. The throat is bound with ribbed silk ribbon through which a drawstring is pulled through and tied at the front. The shoes have one-inch-high shaped and curved heels, with leather soles. The shoes are made as "straights," with no differentiation between right and left.Construction History:

Label TextThese shoes are believed to be the wedding shoes of Anna Ross at her 1795 marriage to George Plumstead. At the end of the eighteenth century, slip-on shoes with very low or flat heels replaced shoes with straps, buckles, and high heels.
ProvenancePart of wedding emsemble from Plumstead / Ross family. According to the donor, "The following items comprise a wedding ensemble from the marriage in 1795 of George Plumstead (1765-1805) and his wife Anna Ross (1776-1846). George Plumstead was a wealthy Philadelphia merchant."
