DescriptionPair of woman's shoes of yellow-ground silk, brocaded with self thread and lavender, pink flowers with green stems and leaves. Shoes have pointed, upturned toes, relatively high squared tongues, and latchets to buckle over the instep (using removable buckles). Thick fabric-covered heels 2" high. One shoe has a label reading "Thos Ridout / James Davis / Shoe Makers / near Aldgate / London." The shoes came with a pair of oval buckles that appear to be later and not original to the shoes.Construction History:

2. The accompanying shoe buckles date from ca. 1790 and were not original to the shoes.
InscribedOne shoe has label reading "Thos Ridout / James Davis / Shoe Makers / near Aldgate / London."
ProvenanceEx. Collection Dan and Jan Olmstead of New Hampshire. The shoes were found in a house in Kittery or Eliot, Maine.
