DescriptionSquare back side chair; flat crest rail with carved raised section at center above splat; splat formed by two downward tapering balusters on rectangular bases carved with leaves and pinecone motif and tenoned into stay rail; between the two balusters is a racquet or fan-line pierced splat attached at top to side balusters with foliate carving in the upper corners; the rounded racquet portion of the splat contains seven out curving ribs emanating from a triangular section carved with a horizontal motif above three pendant bellflowers and a leaf; racquet is supported by a flaring foliate carved element tennoned into stay rail; stiles, crest rail, stay rail, balusters, racquet surround, and fan ribs all molded on edges; trapezoidal seat upholstered over the rail; straight tapered legs, square in cross section, rear legs rake towards back.ProvenanceThe chair was acquired in 1992 from Pennsylvania antiques dealer Randall Huber, who stated that it had been purchased directly from descendants of the Green family in Fredericksburg, Va.
