DescriptionMan's knee breeches, matching coat 1953-836,1. Breeches are made of gold-colored silk uncut voided velvet in a symmetrical lace pattern. Breeches are cut with center-front fly buttoned opening (not fall front, as in later breeches). Two fabric-covered buttons fasten the wide waistband, which has a rear vent for size adjustment. Two thread buttons fasten the fly. The buttoned placket openings at the sides of the knees have four metallic buttons each. Narrow knee bands are intended for buckles. Deep pockets at either side. An additional watch pocket on the left side is entered from top of waistband. A welted pocket is positioned beneath the right buttoned pocket. Linen lining.Construction History:

Largely hidden by a long waistcoat and coat, early breeches were worn low on the hips. Breeches fastened with a buttoned placket down the center front.
