DescriptionA single cotton child’s frame knit stocking with embroidered clocks going up the leg. The top of the stocking is folded to the interior to make a wide casing or welt. The welt also includes on the exterior a three holed makers mark or possibly cutting reference point. Below the welt is the letter “M” skillfully marked on the leg of the stocking.Label TextThis stocking probably once belonged to one of the female children of the Medlycott family. Full length stockings were commonly worn by both boys and girls until the 1790s when boys began to fashionably wear trousers.
Markings"M" located at the top of the stocking below the welt.
ProvenanceA collection of 28 pieces of infant clothing (all 2022-64 accession numbers) descended through various branches of the Medlycott family of Ven House in Somerset, England. The baronetcy was created in 1808 and became extinct in 2021 with the death of Sir Mervyn Tregonwell Medilycott, the 9th Baron of Medlycott. Sadly these garments do not have association with specific members of the family, but were all found stored in The Manor House, Sandford Orcas, in Dorset, England, the home of Sir Mervyn Tregonwell Medilycott, the 9th Baron of Medlycott.
