DescriptionMan's knee breeches from suit of printed cotton velvet ("velveret") in red and black on beige ground in a small scale zig-zag and dash pattern forming vertical stripes. Wide waistband buttoned with two large metallic buttons, possibly replaced; narrow fall buttoned at points with two smaller buttons. Six pockets: two cut into waistband with buttoned welt; two in side seams with vertical buttoned welt, and two under buttoned flaps either side of the fall. Back opening for adjusting waist by means of tabs and buckle (buckle missing). Self fabric knee bands for buckles (missing). Four-button opening above each knee band. Breeches seat is full and gathered into waistband. Breeches linings include silk satin (lining fall and knee button area), cotton-linen slightly napped twill "fustian" (lining the waistband and pockets), and shagg tape (lining the knee band as an aid in holding stockings up). Interlinings of natural tabby weave linen. Seams backed with 3/8" wide silk tape. Marked [?] Jackson in ink on waistband. Faded label sewn into waistband.MarkingsIn ink on breeches waistband: (M ?)
