DescriptionCandlestick: cylindrical socket molded at top and base; stem in form of 6-petaled tubular flower above a molded knop; low-domed, terraced base hexagonally scalloped with the lobes fluted to suggest shells or flower petals. Bobeche with flange hexagonally scalloped and fluted in same pattern as base.
Label TextJohn Cafe and to a lesser extent his brother and former apprentice, William were prolific makers of candlesticks during the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Four identical candlesticks by John Cafe (two 1752/53, one 1754/ 55, and one 1759/60) are also in the Colonial Williamsburg collection (accession 1947-425, 1-4).

MarkingsUnder base each mark in different lobe: date letter "p" for 1750-1751; lion passant; black letter J.C under a rose in trefoil; leopard's head crowned.
