DescriptionCandlestick: cylindrical socket molded at top and base; stem in form of 6-petaled tubular flower above a molded knop; low-domed, terraced base hexagonally scalloped with the lobes fluted to suggest shells or flower petals. Bobeche with flange hexagonally scalloped and fluted in same pattern as base.Label TextJohn Cafe and to a lesser extent his brother and former apprentice, William were prolific makers of candlesticks during the middle decades of the eighteenth century. Four identical candlesticks by John Cafe (two 1752/53, one 1754/ 55, and one 1759/60) are also in the Colonial Williamsburg collection (accession 1947-425, 1-4).

MarkingsUnder base each mark in different lobe: date letter "p" for 1750-1751; lion passant; black letter J.C under a rose in trefoil; leopard's head crowned.
