DescriptionShallow-bowled charger with everted rim and foot ring. Lead glaze on the back; white tin glaze on the front decorated in blue, green, yellow, orange, and grown with a spray of tulips, gillyflowers, and leafage rising from a mound. Blue-dash rim with an inner yellow band.Label TextMost surviving English delft tulip chargers date from the second half of the seventeenth and the first quarter of the eighteenth century. They were probably inspired by the tulip mania that swept Holland and England starting in the late sixteenth century, but the influence of Turkish dishes with tulip decoration has also been suggested with some credence. The London attribution for this dish is based on the decoration.
