DescriptionWoman's waistcoat of white linen embroidered with yellow silk in chain, laid and back stitches in an allover design of wheat sheaves framed in chain circles and set amid conventionalized floral scrolls. Sleeveless and collarless garment was made from previously embroidered material, probably a quilt. Garment opens down front, without closures and is shaped in front and back, widening over hips. Neckline and armholes bound with yellow silk tape. Lined throughout with yellow silk.Construction History:

This waistcoat was once a bed quilt or other object later remade into a woman's waistcoat. Look for seams where fragments were pieced together to make the garment. The yellow silk stitching was worked through a linen backing layer without any filling.
