DescriptionCylindrical mug with flared base and loop handle. White tin glaze decorated in polychrome with a half length portrait of Charles II crowned and in armor and inscription "C (D 2) 1660." The portrait is opposite the handle.Label TextObjects decorated with the figure of a king or queen are often referred to as coronation pieces, and those that are not dated are assumed to have been manufactured in the first year of the monarch's reign. This mug and the four others dated 1660 (the year Charles II came to the throne) and the eight dated 1661 (the year of his coronation) might support that theory were it not for the existence of twenty-two Charles II decorated pieces that are dated from 1662 to 1682. Of the forty-two pieces of dated delft commemorating other monarchs between Elizabeth I and George II, none bears the date of ascension, three bear the year of coronation, and eleven are dated after the monarch's death. A mug of the same form and size in the British Museum is decorated with a similar portrait of Charles II and is also dated 1660.
The London attribution for this mug is based on its relation to a mug excavated at the Pickleherring pottery site in Southwark, now part of London.
