DescriptionPosset pot. Small squat baluster-shaped pot with flared rim, small foot ring S-shaped tubular spout, and two S-scroll handles. Cover missing. White tin glaze decorated in blue with a Chinese landscape including a diamond-roofed pagoda; dashes and spout and handles. The shape of this posset pot relates to those made during the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Numbers 1981-7, a-b and 1954-354 are decorated with similar scenes of a squatting Chinese figure, but the decoration here suggests a later date. The polychrome tea cups and saucers in 1975-144, 1-4, are decorated with a late version of this pattern. The handles relate to those on a seventeenth century London wine taster, or drinking vessel, as well as to the supports on a 1692 money box, 1965-87.Label TextThe shape of this posset pot relates to those made during the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Two other examples in the CWF collection (accessions 1981-7 and 1959-354) are decorated with similar scenes of a squatting Chinese figure, but the decoration here suggests a later date. Polychrome tea cups and saucers in the CWF collection (accession 1975-144) are decorated with a late version of this pattern. The handles relate to those on a privately owned seventeenth-century London wine taster, or drinking vessel, as well as to the supports on a 1692 money box at CWF (1965-87).
