DescriptionCaster: all aparts and molding of octagonal plan; cast peaked ball finial on short waisted section surmounting raised disc on center-top of high domed cover to baluster-shaped body; cover intricately pierced with alternating panels of foliate and geometric designs partially enclosed by engraved lines forming a secondary strapwork pattern; cover held in position and separated from bezel by tripartite molding; bezel fitting within rim of body; body with molding at rim and at contraflexure between tall concave neck and bulbous lower section; body supported on splayed foot with molded face and edge. Large single and matching smaller pair. Uninscribed as to owner.
Label TextMost casters during the first three decades of the eighteenth century are of baluster form, either plain or eight sided, as in this handsome and representative set. A similar set of 1724/25 by Thomas Bamford of London, who served his apprenticeship under Adam and, in turn, was Samuel Wood's master, is also in the collection (accession 1955-261, 1-3). Other similar London casters in the collection include a large and a small caster from a set of 1718/19 by Charles Adam (1936-445, 1-2) and small examples of 1715/16 by Charles Adam (1954-527) and of 1722/23 by Samuel Welder (1954-528).
