DescriptionOval fluted dish with a wavy edge painted with brown line and decorated on the interior with moths, beetles, and flower heads in overglaze enamel colors. It stands on a wide spreading oval wavy edged base which is separated from the dish by a red line. The exterior is decorated with flowers, leaves, beetles, strawberries, and a caterpillar.
Label TextThis vessel, probably for sweetmeats, is sometimes referred to as a strawberry dish, not because of its function, but because of a band of applied strawberries and leaves encircles many examples of this shape. Although some of the scattered painted flower heads and insects are purely decorative, many have been placed to hide bubbles, firing cracks, or other imperfections frequently found on early Chelsea.
