DescriptionFlagon. Engraved: "RELIEF KIRK OF JEDBURGH 1773".Label TextAs with Irish pewter flagons, there is an equally distinctive appearance to Scottish ones. Clearly conveyed in their straight, inclined sides with broad mid-bands is their derivation from early bound wooden water-carrying vessels. This same source of design is also quite evident in a number of other drinking vessels. The solid strap handles and the flat lids with twin-lobed thumb pieces are older features that have been repeated numerous times and reinforce a desired sense of lineage and tradition.
Several elements from the eighteenth-century communion service of the church at Jedburgh, Scotland, are now in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. They include a pair of flagons, a pair of communion cups, and a pair of alms dishes. (See accessions 1973-243, 1-2; 1973-242, 1-2; and 1973-244, 1-2.) Two nineteenth-century pewter communion tokens from the church are in the collection as well (accessions 1974-180 and 1974-181).
