DescriptionThis rectangular panel of fawn satin has a symmetrical design of a conical vase with a bouquet of a large, pink rose or carnation flanked by two purple tulips. The leaves have stylized hatching and dots. The bouquet is framed by a scrolling floral vine that has grapes and grape leaves, large pink feathery flowers, pomegranates, tulips, and other flowers. All are stylized. The left and right are selvedges. The selvedge is held in a plain weave, thirteen warps wide. The outer four warps are sometimes doubled, seemingly without pattern. The inner four warps are doubled. The bottom and top edges are raw. There are stitch lines along the top and bottom that have been pressed toward the reverse.Label TextThough stylistically the design looks like it dates to the first decade of the eighteenth century, the brocade in this fragment uses the technique of point rentre, which means that the earliest it could date is the 1730s.
Markings“NOT FOR SALE” stamps on top and bottom of reverse. Oval stamp saying “MORANT & CO./91 NEW BOND ST./LONDON, W.”
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
