DescriptionThis almost square cream fragment has a design of light blue and white satin stripes with small bouquets of flowers between in the stripes and floral garlands draped between the stripes. The ground also has a moiré pattern. The top and bottom edges are raw, and the right and left edges are selvedges. The selvedge is held in a plain weave in the ground color with two pink stripes. The selvedge is slightly corded; from the outside in, there is one thick warp, then two pink warps, four white warps, four pink warps, then four white warps. There are two lines of stitch holes—likely machine stitching—along the top and bottom edges.
Label TextThe watering on this fragment necessitated the point repeat of the brocade. That way, the length of fragment could be folded down the center and pressed under the watering plate or calendar without the shape of the brocade impressing itself into the fabric.
Markings“NOT FOR SALE” on reverse in crayon; “B2266” stamp; “Morant & Co./19, NEW BROAD ST/LONDON,W.” stamp in every corner.
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
