DescriptionMiniature oblong basket, rectangular at the bottom swelling to an oval top rim. Each short side of the basket has a curved wooden handle, notched to fit snugly under the top rim. Alternating wefts are painted red/bear dots (which may be a faded red).Artist unidentified.
Label TextThe unidentified maker is believed to have been a Native American, but no specific tribal association has been made. It is thought to have been created in Southern New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island).
ProvenanceSometime prior to Cox (see "Vendor" above), this basket was owned by Mary Allis (251 Main St., Southport, Conn. 06490).
